COVID-19 Vaccines: Polish information space using the example of articles published by Onet.pl, Wp.pl, Interia.pl, Wpolityce.pl, Gazeta.pl in the period between 21 June and 4 July 2021.

Below are presented the partial results of the monitoring conducted by the Center for Propaganda and Disinformation Analysis as a part of the “Covid-19 vaccines in Polish- and Russian-language online media outlets: specifics and correlation between them in Polish and Russian information spaces” project and implemented during the period of 10 May – 29 August 2021.

Main topics:

- Introduction of European Union’s digital Covid Certificate in Poland starting 1 July 2021 and the instructions for its use;

- Slower vaccination rate and information on empty vaccination centers in Poland (Dolnośląskie: Punkty szczepień gotowe. Turystów brak, Interia Wydarzenia, 30.06.2021);

- Report on the lowest number of infections in more than a year;

- Cancellation of AstraZeneca’s use in Australia;

- Speculation about a possible connection between getting vaccinated with Pfizer and Moderna and myocarditis;

- Suspicions that Chinese (Indonezja: Zmarło co najmniej 20 lekarzy. Byli zaszczepieni chińskim preparatem, Interia Wydarzenia, 25.06.2021) and Russian vaccines might be less effective;

- Waste of unused vaccines due to the passing expiration date;

- The announcement of the fourth wave of the pandemic in Poland;

- Cross vaccination – ensuring high efficiency of combining doses of different companies (Szczepienia krzyżowe są skuteczniejsze. Niemieccy eksperci zalecają łączenie preparatów, Gazeta.pl, 03.07.2021).

Conclusions:

Due to the season of the analyzed time frame, the news was largely dominated by topics related to easing restrictions in public places and the so-called “vaccine tourism” and entry regulations for travelers.

Polish news sites consistently denied conspiracy theories created by anti-vaccination movements. An example is the refutation of an argument of higher mortality rates due to the delta variant among vaccinated people compared to the unvaccinated ones (M. Raducha, Antyszczepionkowcy w błędzie. Wariant delta dużo groźniejszy dla niezaszczepionych, Interia Wydarzenia, 30.06.2021).
